Ground Operations Webinar Series: Let's Speak The Same Language (Part 1)

In the ever-evolving landscape of aviation and logistics, efficient ground operations play a pivotal role in ensuring seamless connectivity and timely movement of goods and people. As industries continue to adapt to new challenges and opportunities, staying updated on the latest trends is paramount. The Ground Operations Webinar Series was created to cover 6 key topics in the industry, increase knowledge and shed light on the future of ground operations. In this article, we'll delve into the key takeaways from the first half of the webinar series and explore how they contribute to shaping the future of ground operations.

Autonomous Ground Service Equipment

The first webinar, "Autonomous Ground Service Equipment," brought together experts to discuss the paradigm-shifting concept of autonomous equipment in ground operations. The discussion revolved around the deployment of self-driving vehicles for tasks such as aircraft servicing, and baggage and cargo transportation. The key takeaway was that autonomy has the potential to revolutionize ground operations by enhancing efficiency, reducing human errors, and even operating round-the-clock. Speakers highlighted the benefits of autonomous equipment, such as increased operational uptime, precise task execution, and lower manual labour on the ramp. However, concerns were also addressed, including the need for robust safety protocols (being addressed by AHM 908), integration with existing infrastructure, and the potential impact on operations in the industry. The consensus was that while challenges exist, the positives of autonomy on ground operations cannot be ignored.

Taking a closer look: The Standard Ground Handling agreement

The second webinar “Taking a closer look: The Standard Ground Handling agreement” focused on the SGHA framework and dove into details about the way that the agreement is meant to work. The IATA Ground Operations Standards Groups has  appointed industry ground handling procurement experts from Airlines and Ground Handling Service Providers to develop  the SGHA 2023 version. This webinar provides details about the latest changes in the main agreement, Annex A and B and the rationale behind all the changes. Our panelists discussed the Standard Ground Handling Agreement and its' relevancy for today's ground handling contracts.

Insight into Training Standardization

The third webinar "Insight into Training Standardization," shed light on the crucial role of consistent training procedures in ensuring seamless ground operations. The discussions emphasized the significance of standardizing training protocols across various operational roles. Speakers emphasized the importance of aligning with industry standards, such as Chapter 11 of the IATA Ground Operations Manual. This alignment not only ensures global standardization via compliance with the industry standards and also contributes to overall industry excellence. An intriguing concept discussed was "training passports". Training passports can simplify compliance audits, enable personnel mobility, and offer operational flexibility. The key takeaway was that standardization aims to enhance the level of training across industries and reduces training time and costs. Standardized procedures mean safer, more efficient, and more cost-effective ground operation practices.

The three webinars, "Autonomous GSE: A reality on the ramp",” Taking a closer look: The Standard Ground Handling Agreement” and “Insight Into Training Standardization," provide a comprehensive view of the future of ground operations. The integration of autonomous systems promises unprecedented efficiency and safety, redefining how tasks are performed on the ground. Simultaneously, training standardization paves the way for consistent excellence by aligning with industry norms and embracing uniform training practices.

As aviation and logistics continue to evolve, staying informed about the latest trends and innovations is crucial for maintaining a competitive edge. The latest editions of the Airport Handling Manual (AHM) and IATA Ground Operations Manual (IGOM) are vital resources to help you to stay up to date with the latest standards. The insights gained from these webinars offer a roadmap to navigate the complex terrain of ground operations. By embracing autonomy, creating a standard ground handling agreement and adhering to standardized training, the industry can deal better with the staff shortage and look forward to a future marked by efficiency, safety, and seamless connectivity.
